Special Olympics - SoCal

Hundreds of gold, silver and bronze medals are polished and ready to be awarded as Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) Summer Games return to the California State Long Beach (6000 E Atherton St, Long Beach, CA 90815) campus and Recreation Park Golf Course (5000 E 7th St, Long Beach, CA 90814), June 13-14, 2015. More than 5,000 local dignitaries, corporate sponsors, spectators and family members are expected to attend. Admission to all events is free.

The annual event begins early Saturday morning with the torch lighting opening ceremony at 9:30am, followed by competitions, award ceremonies and special athlete educational events scheduled throughout the weekend.

An estimated 1,100 athletes from Southern California will compete in Aquatics, Athletics (Track & Field), Basketball, Bocce, Golf, and Gymnastics. Along with the games, weekend competitions will also include games, live entertainment, community and law enforcement exhibits at Expo Park and the Grand Prize drawing for the Special Olympics Southern California Dream House Raffle campaign, where more than 1,600 prizes including the grand prize will be awarded. The Summer Games are the first of two Southern California championships held each year, and this year’s games serve as prelude to the much anticipated Special Olympics 2015 World Summer Games, held July 25-August 2.

Called one of the largest humanitarian events in Los Angeles since the 1984 Summer Olympics, World Games (www.LA2015.org ) will bring an estimated half-million people to the greater Los Angeles area, with more than 7,000 Special Olympic athletes participating from 170 nations. There will be 15 athletes competing in Summer Games who will then compete in the World Games. Day one of Summer Games will include the annual “Breakfast with Champions” where leaders of the business and sports communities come together to honor the accomplishments of Special Olympics athletes. This year, keynote speaker will be Doc Rivers, President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach for the Los Angeles Clippers. Tickets start at $75 and can be purchased at www.sosc.org/bwc.

During Summer Games, SOSC will showcase two of its signature programs, Healthy Athletes and Young Athletes. Free health screenings will be provided, and participants in the Young Athletes Program (ages 2 ½ to 7) will learn the importance of sporting activities, which are vital to mental development and physical growth to the youngest members of the Special Olympics community.

Leaders from SOSC and Cal State Long Beach will formally announce that the partnership between Special Olympics Southern California and Cal State Long Beach will continue, as the University has extended its agreement to host Summer Games through 2017.
“We are tremendously grateful to the University and its generosity,” says Bill Shumard CEO and President, Special Olympics Southern California. “From use of campus facilities for matches, their residence halls which house our athletes, to the welcoming staff, we are thrilled that Summer Games will continue at Cal State Long Beach.”
For nearly 50 years, Special Olympics has provided individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to succeed through the power of sport, providing sports training, competitions, and health education opportunities at no cost to them or their families.
“Seeing the determination on their faces is inspiring,” says Shumard. “Our athletes are excited to share the benefits of the many hours they have spent practicing and improving their skills, while building lasting relationships with coaches and teammates. It’s truly remarkable to watch the athletes live the oath of Special Olympics, ‘If I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.’ That’s what Special Olympics is all about.”

America's Family Pet EXPO (Ticket Giveaway)



America's Family Pet Expo returns to the OC Fair & Event Center
April 10 - 12


Enthusiasts of all creatures great and small will unite at the America’s Family Pet Expo (AFPE), returning to the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, April 10th – 12th.  Marking its 26th year, the AFPE joins cats, dogs, miniature horses, birds, and exotic reptiles, together in this unique event giving show guests the opportunity to experience furry, feathered and scaled friends in a variety of different ways.

AFPE kindly reminds guests that the event is for humans only, pets are not allowed at the Expo, but there are plenty of interactive exhibits, educational shows and demonstrations, as well as the latest in pet trends and products for sale, so your pets won’t need to feel left out. New to the Expo, is the Purina Pro-Plan Performance Team, a high energy dog agility show that will surely be an audience favorite!  Splash Dogs take to the dock, offering a wet-and-wild canine competition, and the ever popular Human Hamster Wheel water attraction will have you running in circles.

Debuting at the 2015 Expo is “Cook’s Racing Hogs & Dogs,” a race that consists of four pigs, which run from one end of a 90-foot U-shaped track to the other.  Four dogs then compete in a similar race.  Waiting at the end of the track is a treat - vanilla ice cream and a golden Oreo cookie!  There is also lots of audience participation with this event, so get ready for some mud-slinging and fur flying fun!

Also returning are the Police Dog & Protection Demonstrations, crime fighting dogs in action showing how they serve and protect our community.  And don’t miss the Free Flight Bird Show where magnificent birds spread their wings and take flight. 

Kids can get in on the action by designing and creating a 10-gallon aquarium in the Kids Aquarium Contest.  There will also be pony rides, face paintings, and The Great American Petting Zoo for the whole family to enjoy.  If adventure calls, be sure to check out the Eurobungy Trampoline brought to you by West Coast Bungy.

Pet Adoptions will be handled on site for those looking for that “purrfect” animal addition to the family.  There will be hundreds of animals hoping to find their forever home from local community partner organizations at the Expo. Last year posted a record of more than 700 adoptions, Expo organizers hope to set a new record for 2015.

Mad Hatter Tea Party Event - Promenade Temecula




Promenade Temecula is welcoming Spring in an exciting whimsical way, with a special Mad Hatter Tea Party - themed event  on Saturday, March 28 from 11 am - 1 pm.

This all-new event will include a variety of fun activities, crafts and tea treats, as well as special character appearances by Alice, the Mad Hatter, and the White Rabbit himself!
“We are turning our outdoor plaza into a magical wonderland adventure where families can create fun, new memories as we enter into the Spring season,” explained Kym Espinosa, Director of Marketing at Promenade Temecula. “One of the highlights of this Mad Hatter Tea Party event will be the special wonderland-themed games, which will include Flamingo Croquet and a Queen of Hearts Tossing game, with participating children being awarded Easter eggs filled with prizes.”
In addition to the fun wonderland-themed games, children will also have the opportunity to participate in a free Mad Hatter hat craft at the event. All supplies will be provided for this craft, which will allow children to create their very own festive top hat to wear at the event. 


Children will also receive a snack box upon arrival, which will be filled with delicious tread including a sandwich, cookie and a drink.

Tickets are to this event are FREE and available for children 3-10 years of age, and can be picked up at Promenade Temecula's Guest Services.
